Breast Augmentation + Liposuction: Venezuelans commonly borrow for plastic surgery.

Venezuelans commonly borrow for plastic surgery.

In the subway you can see ads for clinics that offer credit for plastic surgery, Thermage, Fraxel, laser hair removal, breast augmentation, laser treatments and Botox treatments, and that women who work use their vacation bonuses and borrow from their work savings accounts. The cosmetic surgery and medical spa industry will make sure that cosmetic work remains within reach to ensure a steady flow of income.

THE NEED TO BE BEAUTIFUL

Despite the hefty price tag, the choice to get plastic surgery, Botox, or laser treaments is not considered a luxury for some Venezuelans.

"We need to be beautiful," said Patino.

Competition among women, by far the biggest consumers of plastic surgery in Venezuela, to look their best is fierce, and social pressure to get work done is high.

"Socially, there is a lot of demand, especially from men, to have a good body," said Prem Pratita, a 27-year-old who had a breast augmentation a few weeks ago.

In this image-conscious country, famous for beauty queens who win record numbers of international pageant titles, the idea of getting cosmetic surgery is instilled at a young age.

Patino recalls how, as a child, her mother and aunt dreamt of surgery to get rid of wrinkles. Now, with a child of her own, the subject is already on the table.

"I told my husband, 'Look honey, if she has your nose, she's going to get plastic surgery,'" said Patino.

Some young women even describe moving up a few cup sizes through plastic surgery as a rite of passage.

"It's a transformation from being a girl to being a woman," said Pratita, who said she was one of the last in her circle of friends to have the procedure.

"Everybody has a breast augmentation. Three or four of every seven women have one," said plastic surgeon Angel Pena, who likens his surgery to body decoration practiced for centuries.

"By nature, human beings have the desire to look better ... this desire is timeless and it's a desire that doesn't depend on your economic situation ... it's not that frivolous."

Mesotherapy vs. Liposuction

There is a big difference between Mesotherapy and Liposuction.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires incisions and the insertion in the patient's body of metal probes that with a back and forth motion, causing significant trauma. Liposuction is suctioning out the fat cells, that will never return but if patients eat too many calories they will reaccumulate fat in other area where they never had fat before. The back, thighs, arm are frequent sites of new fat accumulation.

Mesotherapy works by disrupting the fat cell membranes, destroying the fat cell and releasing the fat to be metabolized and excreted in the same way it is processed when we loose weight with diet and exercise. (It is recommended that mesotherapy patients follow a reduced calorie diet during treatment to prevent the fat form being re-absorbed by other cells.)

(Read Lipodisolve: Mesotherapy horror posts.)

There are no abnormal sites of accumulation and it is more difficult to re-accumulate fat in the areas treated.

Although the costs could be similar, mesotherapy offers no down time and is much safer compared to any surgical intervention (liposuction). Be sure you go to a reputable medical spa for mesotherapy or lipodisolve and a plastic surgeon for liposuction.

Medical Spa: Natural breast augmentation.

When the first laser lipolysis device was approved by the FDA it started a whole new revolution in the medical spa industry.

Many physicians who invested in the technology believe it saved their practices from succumbing to the downfall of the economy. Soon after the approval, an array of new lipolysis technologies began to develop over time. Wavelengths were altered to find the optimal "melting point", ultrasound technology was applied, high-powered water jets were developed - all in the name of technological advancement. At that time I wondered, "What the industry could possibly develop to top this?".

It wasn't long until I received my answer! Enter, the Natural Breast Augmentation procedure utilizing fat transfer under local anesthesia! Hard to believe this procedure wasn't perfected sooner! Take the fat from one body area and put it in another - perfect! Up until this point, there was a lot of controversy regarding fat transfer. In fact, for 20 years it was denounced by U.S. plastic surgery societies as being a "dangerous" procedure. Unfortunately, this declaration was based on the technology and techniques utilized over 20 years ago. Heck, even our laptops are obsolete after 3 years!

Dr. Todd K. Malan of the Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, AZ developed new techniques which resulted in the lifting of this "ban" in March of 2009. Many dispute the success rate for the survival of the fat after the transfer. However, with the latest technological advancements in fat harvesting, adipocyte survival rates have proven to be 85% to 90%. With the addition of adult stem cells to enhance the fat transfer and breast splinting technology, adipocyte survival rates have shown to be even higher. In fact, Dr. Malan states that when the fat transfer is concentrated with adult stem cells harvested from the patient's own fat, and is injected into the fat that is already within the breast, the result can equal a permanent increase of 250cc to 500cc in overall breast size equating to a 1 to 2 cup size increase.

Of course there are many facets to this procedure not covered in this post. I just applaud innovative technology when I see it for my own eyes. So much so, that Young medical spa (our medspa) is now performing this procedure after being trained by Dr. Malan himself and others like Dr. Jeffrey Caruth of Plano Aesthetics in Plano, TX. Technology is wonderful, isn't it?

I wonder what the industry could possibly develop to top this?
